Sandra had been designing for years for family and friends while working full time in the environmental field. When an opportunity came to move to DC, she couldn’t pass it up. There she attended
Marymount University and graduated with a
Bachelor’s in Interior Design. She worked with the prestigious firm of Barbara Hawthorne, a high-end residential design firm and with well-known kitchen designer Dee David & Company of Virginia. Some of Sandra’s
projects included the Washington National Symphony Showhouse and the
Forbes Magazine Washington Design Center Showhouse. She opened Gaylord Design in 2007 and in January 2009, she opened an office in Royal Oak, MI.
Sandra is designing a
small bedroom located on the second floor of Maison Stoney to
accommodate children or adults, requiring two beds. The space was impeded by a fireplace and closet, so she used two twin beds and placed the
headboards at 90 degree angles to allow better circulation in the remaining space. The
custom headboards were designed to
function as chaise lounges and beds. Sconces placed strategically around the room eliminated the need for the harsh overhead light and the
sconces have dimmers when more or less light is required. The nonfunctional fireplace was utilized for a dresser with drawers and raised panel doors.
Neutrals with small applications of blue were used to keep the room
soft and serene, and the textured wall treatment created depth and shadows. The wall treatment is representative of an earlier time and the
objects in the room are 21st century with a nod to that earlier time. The room used largely organic and/or sustainable products. The treatment on the walls does not contain any VOC’s and helps to impede the mold we often encounter in our humid environment. The only chair in the room is a flea market find.
