DesignIntuit Reports-CasaDecor Madrid 2010
Madrid is the host of the international style exhibition CasaDecor. This European design experience is laden with spirit, spunk and ingenuity. I experienced stunning expressions in design, glorious combinations of color and light, indulgent layering of textures, and furniture designs that will surly lead style for years to come. The consideration of space and functionality practiced by these talented designers will be copied the world over because of the genius of making compact spaces feel luxurious and spacious. We will be providing more coverage of the event so even if you can’t get to Madrid before the show closes on June 20, 2010, keep coming back here for more in depth coverage, trends, solutions, and tips Madrid STYLE!

CasaDecor Madrid is the first international designer show we have attended and what a fabulous event to see in person! We were invited by Frances Llopis, a patron of CasaDecor for 18 years and celebrated our visit with the owner Kersti Urvois over a glass of Cava in their hip bar at the Show House. Not only is there a bar, but also a restaurant and café all serving cool drinks and outstanding food. Just to eat in that restaurant is reason enough to attend the show.

CasaDecor is truly a design exhibition and is not a “traditional” Show House. The event is staged in a commercial space or in this instance a soon to be redeveloped apartment building with “units’” of about 5000 square feet. Sixty-eight spaces were designed as kitchens, bedrooms, dining and living rooms, bathrooms, salons, hallways, protypes for loft spaces and apartments, and even a teen’s room designed for the handicap. This is a show about inclusion not just exclusivity. There is something for everyone who attends, with style tips that span generations, budgets, and functionality.

I went through the house three different times to take it all in and here is a sampling of what these talented designers presented for the month-long show.

Mafalda Munoz created a comfortable monochromatic Salon that is inviting and dramatic. Her use of fabric on the walls and ceiling makes the space feel intimate and sexy. This is a great design solution to make a formal room more casual and practically speaking a way to cover the imperfections in the walls. For a beach house or a city apartment this design can transform a space into a place where everyone will congregate.

Hector Rulz Velazquez designed a small loft into a swanky and practical living space with a kitchen, study, eat in area, and bathroom with a master bedroom built above these public spaces. So instead of the bed being front and center in a one-room space, he shows how to achieve privacy and separation from the other “rooms” in the loft. This is exceptional “out of the box” thinking and a study in functionality!

The Carillo Design Group presented a living room with a lighting feature across an entire wall constructed out of hard plastic with 3 D sculpted flowers that are backlit. This is a fabulous use of dimensional color and is the art of the room. The photographs don’t really capture the total effect but will give an idea of their design flair.

Juan Carlos Sanz designed a high concept “garden of letters” room with the centerpiece-his designed reclining chaise. The jewel toned colors and the sumptuous velvet make this eye candy in furniture design. And the genius here is that this is chaise is so incredibly comfortable as well. Juan can design this great piece in any size and with any fabrics!

Remigio Gudin’s Curato de Estar Lounge is relaxed and elegant. The feature piece, the deep peacock colored sofa is so comfortable and functional too. The books tucked into the sides alleviates clutter with an elegant touch. The monochromatic room is punctuated with accessories of various colors and the subtle mural gives the room a reflective sustenance. The black credenzas with gold inlaid diagonals are sleek and sexy with their red laquer inside. He designed these and they are an extremely good value for the craftsmanship. He can make any of this furniture by special order.

More to come! Join us later this week for expanded coverage!

CASA DECOR INAUGURATES ITS LATEST EDITION - MADRID 2010

From May 20th through June 20th, Casa Decor will open its doors to the latest edition of the Madrid 2010 show. It will take place in a stately mansion dating from the beginning of the XX century, which consists of apartments located on the Calle Velázquez, 29 on the corner of Goya.

Thanks to the characteristics of the building, over 4,000 sq meters, have been converted into 65 ample and beautiful sunny living rooms: libraries, lofts, suits, children's rooms, kitchens, halls and much more. One of the highlights is the interior patio where the designers have created an outdoor area to savor a cup of coffee or a beer. Even the old garage spaces have been transformed into different architectural proposals.

On this occasion, Casa Decor has gathered over 120 professionals, between interior designers, architects, landscape designers and artists, with more than 300 companies related to construction and interior design industry showcasing the latest decorative tendencies, such as the newest living solutions, materials, intelligent home systems, electronics, integral climatization systems and ecological designs.

New this year is the "Boulevard of Top Brand Shops"; small pop-up stores where the visitor can acquire products of well-known fashion and beauty brands.

Likewise, in this edition Casa Decor has given a well-deserved homage to Paco Muñoz, an unprecedented name in decoration and design in Spain, through a retrospective of his life and works.

During the month the exhibit is open, Casa Decor will host a series of activities such as: a forum on sustainability, given by renowned architects, workshops on reforming your home, chats about color trends, wine tastings, cooking courses and make up sessions.

The prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF) has joined Casa Decor to launch the presentation of its next festival in Spain. This union between Casa Decor and WAF will create a unique synergy between all participating architects, interior designers and companies.
