2009 KIPS BAY DECORATOR SHOW HOUSE

Commentary
The 2009 Kips Bay Decorator Show House is blazing with the astonishing skill and finesse of interior design and fashion luminaries. Housed in a $70 milliondouble-wide townhouse on East 71st Street in New York City, the 38th annual show may be their most voluminous edition. Inside the 20,000 square foot 1922 Manhattan landmark is the stunning envelope for 32 designed and transformed rooms, where interior designers, artists, and craftsmen present their concepts and creations on an opulent fantastical stage.

This is the place to see why design matters in a “show-and-tell” environment that educates and enhances our lives. Original concepts, new trends, and ingenious design solutions are bottled here from the source. The ideas, colors, shapes, and materials are templates that we can all interpret and use in our homes from this style laboratory!

Here are our Highlights:

Design Solution for windows at The Lounge by Charles Pavarini III

Charles Pavarini III transformed an enormous space that was once an art gallery into a celestial room that is his best Show House creation yet! His color palate of shimmering silver with amethyst tones and a monochromatic mix of crèmes and whites are sensual. His furnishings are based on original designs in collaboration with legendary furniture designers like Dakota Jackson.

“I believe my creations are most successful when designers and their clients make them their own. Charles Pavarini’s vision in white for the ‘Modern Console’ is perfect for the environment he has created at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House”.
~ Dakota Jackson

Statement pieces like Jackson's “Modern Console” all echo Pavarini's design philosophy for “The New Contemporary” look that features “a highly stylized synthesis of architectural millwork, state-of the-art lighting design and new and vintage furnishings from the 1940’s through today”. An LED vaulted ceiling is a light show of undulating colors of reflective nuances. The design solutions he presents include a lesson on how to work with an awkward wall of windows and make them magnificent with artistically designed combinations of vertical and horizontal draperies. The craftsmanship, texture, rhythm and color of these custom-made draperies, made by Anthony Lawrence-Belfair are exquisite. His layering solution of mounting pictures that invisibly dangle from the draperies is brilliant. The art in this room is an eclectic mix of living sculpture by Robert Cannon, a Camille Seaman iceberg photograph and David Rockwell mirrors. This room resonates with Charles' life-long devotion and enthusiasm for design best expressed in his charming words, “This room is testament that I am a 26-year overnight success”!

Juan Montoya Design in the 2009 Kips Bay Decorator Show House

Juan Montoya's custom seating solution
Design icon Juan Montoya transformed a staid dining room into a living room of breath-taking splendor with his use of a “Nordic Light” color palate in soothing shades of light gray, pearl, steel blue and white. This mastery of color combinations is a lesson in how an inspiration from nature can personalize a room and become the art of the room itself. His geometric metal chandelier and mix of impact pieces of furniture and art blend seamlessly, to create in an inviting tone of cool luxury. That seating solution he created in velvet liquid blue of modern lines with classical tufting shows us all why he is one of the most revered designers of our time.

Matthew Patrick Smyth's themed room for Gloria Vanderbilt
Matthew Patrick Smyth’s “Memories and Desire Bedroom” is inspired by legendary Gloria Vanderbilt’s actual bedroom from her teenage years. Drawing from her memories of the actual fabrics, furnishings, books and music of her time spent at 60 Washington Mews in New York, she and Matthew collaborated to recreate a nostalgic and authentic “period piece” of a 1940’s style bedroom-the one in which she actually lived. The result is the brilliance of divine inspiration that transcends an authentic concept for a dramatic, glamorous unique result.

Kathy Abbott's Jewel Box Sitting Room

Kathy Abbott’s “Jewel Box Sitting Room” is a study in how to maximize a small space and make it a grand room. The combinations of handmade bespoke precious wallpapers, antiques, and art create a personal expression showcase of favorite things. Her antique objects are in harmony with the silk curtains and Pagoda valance for a consistent Chinese theme that is both subtle and intelligent. The addition of the custom-designed bookcases provides an architectural anchor that balances the room and is a functional element.

Christopher Corcoran's Second Floor Landing

Christopher Corcoran shows us how to transform a hard, unusual space into a warmer more functional room on his “Second Floor Landing”. By incorporating motif elements of the stairwells into custom designed fret work panels, he calms the marble walls and lights them up with soothing shades of amber and steely blues. He warms the space with a collection of paintings that are mounted onto the fretwork to give the art more light and dimension. The upholstered table and benches in cerused oak from his Corcoran’s Shedd Furniture Collection soften the metal and marble surroundings. These sublime pieces as well as the Stark carpet underneath them are available for purchase, as are many of the furnishings, accessories, antiques, and art.

Highlights of the 2009 Kips Bay Show House

Amy Lau for Maya Romanoff
Staircase -Maya Romanoff Corporation kicks off its 40th anniversary with a spring floral theme installation by New York designer Amy Lau, who enlisted paper artist Jo Lynn Alcorn. Maya Romanoff papers will be used in a three-dimensional presentation highlighting cut flowers that transform the staircase from the second to the third floor. Featured products include: Wall Mica™ (background), Remember Paris™ (magnolia buds and flowers), Weathered Walls™ (branches), and custom hand-painted Grecian Crystal™ (leaves). (www.amylaudesign.com, www.mayaromanoff.com)

BJS + Associates - The Secret Hideaway Laundry Room
- Bonnie Steves and Carla Sandahl Gotta of BJS + Assoc transform this laundry room into a secret hideaway with a graphic custom SICIS mosaic floor, vibrant touches of yellows and lime greens combined with mid-century furnishing, and modern sassy accents. Working exclusively with Electrolux’s limited edition Kelly Green appliances, with their 18-minute wash-to-dry cycle, the task becomes so easy one can spend hours luxuriating in the laundry room without doing laundry!

Bunny Williams – Grand Salon - a Summa Cum Laude graduate of “Parish Hadley University”, Williams was selected to design the grand salon on the first floor creating a modern version of the great room. To this scenario, Williams adds a flat screen TV to a superb 18th century mahogany bookcase from Niall Smith along with a custom rustic wood plank table on metal legs which serves both as a dining table and work area. The salon also serves as the setting for Williams’ BeeLine Home, a new limited-edition home furnishings collection highlighted by a Nailhead sofa, Palladian console, Luna and Chicken Feather lamps, and Taj embroidered pillows - pieces that give a room character without costing a bundle. In keeping with this theme, she adds a hand painted sisal rug, curtains stitched together from Indian cotton bedspreads, and a vast collection of artwork from emerging artists and photographers at all price points. (www.beelinehome.com)

Charlotte Moss – Master Bedroom - Moss devised an imaginary scenario between a husband and wife seeking a happy common ground for the design of the master suite. He wanted navy blue, she wanted pink, the compromise: he got the bedroom in a blend of midnight blue DeGournay Teapaper walls, Rivages d’Asie sheets by D. Porthault, a lit à la Polonaise from the estate of Evangeline Bruce, and a collection of Maria Sibylla Merian exotic hand-colored engravings of wild plants and creatures. Her adjacent sitting room (twice the size!) is in bold pinks and mauves with Ice Blue Raw Silk wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries, painted furniture, new Michael Divine mauve fabric at the windows, a Louis XV four poster bed, planters bursting with flowers and a deep pink and mauve 1930’s Oushak rug from Doris Leslie Blau. (www.charlottemoss.com)

Charles Pavarini III Design Associates Inc. - The Lounge - Part Piano Lounge, part Social Lounge, the room has an awe-inspiring impact that showcases various forms of craftsmanship. From the ceiling finished with intricate hand-cast architectural plaster-work to luxurious furniture designed by Pavarini to the custom wood, metal, and glass casegood pieces by Dakota Jackson, Lorin Marsh and Daniel Scuderi, the room boasts a contemporary yet timeless feel. Important vintage elements by Meissen, Silas Seandel, Celine, and Heinrich are brought to life by the Art-Case Steinway piano custom carved by John Eric Byers. Organic elements such as specimen quartz crystals and references such as the Niedermaier Log Chair and a tree-like vintage bronze table contrast the architectural refinement. (www.pavarinidesign.com)

Christopher Coleman - The Loft Lounge – Coleman collaborated with fashion designer Angel Sanchez, known for his wedding dresses for Eva Longoria and Sandra Bullock, to create a room that fuses fashion and design. This large, airy loft space is designed for the “recessionista” to work, lounge and play. The room shines with a host of metallic treatments including a Lurex metallic carpet and a black lace ceiling. Highlights include a mirrored desk and a dramatic new design for a Ping Pong table in polished steel. (www.ccinteriordesign.com)

Christopher Corcoran – Second Floor Landing – The highlight of this space is intricate open fretwork panels finished in a high-gloss lacquer carefully positioned in front of the existing marble walls. The design has been distilled to simple geometry and mirrors the ornate inset panels which presently comprise the railing in the main staircase. An awning panel incorporating the same fretwork and suspended from above draws the eye toward the richly decorative painted ceiling tray. The furniture is both elegant and relaxed featuring a table and benches in cerused oak from Corcoran’s Shedd collection. The artwork is from Iliad Antiks and Neptune Fine Arts. An antique runner from Stark Carpet anchors the tableau. (www.christophercorcoran.com)

Christopher Maya – Front Vestibule, Foyer and Foyer Stairwell - The Neo-Renaissance style and scale of these rooms were both an inspiration and challenge for Maya who sought to transform the space into one where a family could relax or entertain. Maya references the period with his choice of hand woven Ikat fabric made in Uzbekistan from Bermingham and Company and purple mohair for upholstered pieces including the dramatic vestibule canopy, custom banquettes and Dutch chandelier with hand-made shades in matching Ikat fabric. He adds a contemporary feel by incorporating modern pieces of artwork and furniture and covering some chairs in crisp white linen. To minimize the stone walls of the foyer and make it feel more like a room, he book ended each opening with a custom designed Italian Renaissance-inspired casing painted in black high gloss trimmed in gold leaf. Additional highlights include a hanging Dutch chandelier plastered and painted white adorned with white shades trimmed in colors taken from the Ikat fabric. (www.christophermayainc.com)

Donald Schermerhorn Interior Design – “A Sitting Room of One’s Own” - Schermerhorn has created a calming envelope of a room incorporating significant English antiques and modern art. A Glasskote fireplace and matching baseboard and lacquered ceiling provide the room with shimmer while drama is achieved by upholstered bed placed upon an antique Tabriz carpet. Highlights include a circa 1750 mirror hung over a Julian Chichester console, a George III silver bedside table. Stephen Pace’s “Untitled 1951” balances Renaat Iven’s 2005 color field painting. (www.donaldschermerhorn.com)

Drake Design Associates - “A Logical Library” - Planned with three separate but connected groupings, this cozy room illustrates how to create a stylish bed-sit. A capacious seating group is grounded by a custom eleven-foot sofa flanked by a pair of wood framed mid-century chairs by T.H Robsjohn-Gibbings and a curvaceous French 1940’s barrel chair. The center of the room is anchored by a large daybed covered in a silver glazed linen fabric from Celerie Kemble for Schumacher and detailed with Swarovski crystals. Accent highlights include a Fontana Arte chandelier circa 1950, a heroically scaled bookcase by Christian Liaigre from Holly Hunt, and a totemic high backed Jamie Drake chair and ottoman. (www.drakedesignassociates.com)

Garrow Kedigian- The Urban Retreat - This New York-based interior designer has transformed a small maid's room into a multi-use space alive with vibrant colors. Playing with a classical theme of Greek mythology, the walls are a deep orangey/brown, and painted paneling lines characterize the walls and ceiling throughout in a softer deep mocha color, making the space like a jewel box. An upholstered corner banquette in sumptuous deep chocolate velvet anchors the corner, and a quirky high table topped with stone marble serves many purposes. Whimsical pillows add color and texture while a custom carpet also in Greek Key design furthers the theme. The room is anchored by a giant painting of the Russian poet and writer Vladimir Mayakovsky. (www.garrowkedigian.com)

GunkelmanFlesher - His Master Bathroom - Andrew Flesher created a special retreat for the man of the house. Here, earthy, neutral colors and materials were used to create a natural and organic feeling. The juxtaposition of antiques and vintage industrial pieces work in harmony with the quiet details to add to the overall masculinity of the room. (www.gunkelmanflesher.com)

Eileen Kathryn Boyd – “Color Vibe” Sitting Room - Drawing her inspiration from colorful fashion runways and art galleries, Eileen’s sitting room combines bold proportions with playful sophistication. Duralee leopard print fabric and bold shades of hot pink, green, orange make a stunning background for remarkable artworks by Stanley Twardowizc, Helen Frankenthaler and Lillian Dodson. (www.ekbinteriors.com)

Ike Kligerman Barkley- An Italian Bedroom – For this dramatic bedroom, New York based interior designer and architect John Ike was inspired by Il Vittoriale, Italian novelist Gabriele D’Annuzio’s iconic villa . The focal point is a raised alter-like platform behind a classical balustrade featuring surrealistic pieces of furniture by Italian artist and set designer Mario Ceroli including a Russian pine bed entitled “La Bocca della Veritas “(the Mouth of Truth) from the collection of Stockholm modernist furniture dealer, Paul Jackson. Highlights include Dedar citron colored Italian silk upholstered walls and “bark texture” gold plaster wall coverings. Additional features include soft layered curtains that resemble Swiss cheese, ivory leather floors, glass reliquary night stands encased in bales of straw and gold lamé and Ultra Clear silver mirrors. (www.ikba.com)

Janna Bullock – Collector’s Retreat – Bullock brings this space to life by bridging western and eastern art works with strong and often restored architecture that becomes part of the aesthetic. Every space in this fifth floor aerie is utilized. Moss covered walls and columns serve as the sustainable backdrop to artworks from Art 20 Gallery and the Aidan Gallery. Wire frame furniture sculptures by Anya Zholud hang in the atrium, creating virtual interiors where a Sam Taylor-Wood photomural depicting scenes of daily life hangs high above. Other artworks of note include Verner Panton’s “S” chair, sculptures by Philipp Dontsov, Jeff Zimmerman, Kelly McCallum and Christopher Kurtz.

Joe Nye – Vestibule and Sitting Room - L.A.-based designer Nye takes his inspiration from the colorful and vibrant rooms of legendary decorator Otto Zenke and the look of Palm Beach circa 1950. This lively combination of color and fabric brightens the two small rooms and makes for a fun combination of elements used in an unexpected way. As a contrast against the bright tangerine and canary walls Nye chose a masculine palette for furnishings that include a tobacco wool tufted sofa, a dark walnut center table and a rare Art Deco chandelier along with mid-century pieces from T. H. Robsjohn Gibbings and Tommy Parzinger. (www.joenyeinc.com)

Juan Montoya – “ Nordic Light” Living Room - Juan Montoya has transformed the mansion’s somber formal dining room overlooking an interior covered courtyard into a glowing study of light and space. Montoya saw that while the room had tremendous proportions, rich woodwork and a dramatic fireplace it lacked a true identity. He transformed it into a living room with a light feeling in cool shades of light gray, pearl, steel blue and white - colors that evoke the name “Nordic Light.” The focal points of the room include an 18th century marble top table and a large metal chandelier of Montoya’s own design. He also chose art work and furniture for impact rather than value to illustrate that not everything has to cost a fortune. (www.juanmontoyadesign.com)

Kathy Abbott Interiors – Jewel Box Sitting Room - Working with the 100-year-old custom wallpaper firm Gracie, Abbott designed elegant, hand-painted Chinese scenic wallpaper for the walls and a gold tea leaf to create a warm glow on the ceiling. The room, highlighted by a stunning Helen Frankenthaler painting, also features a custom-designed bookcase, an antique writing table and two 18th century chairs covered in leather. The window treatment juxtaposes a woven wood shade with silk curtains highlighted by a Pagoda valance furthering the subtle Chinese theme. Antique Chinese Scholars objects and antiquities commingle with period English antiques. (www.kathyabbottinteriors.com)

Lichten Craig - 4th Floor Bedroom and Adjacent Sitting room - Inspired by the classic tune "Cuddle Up a Little Closer, Lovey Mine,” these two elegant rooms feature a host of custom finishes and fabrics that lend a masculine touch including glowing Venetian plaster for ceilings, custom mixed lacquer for doors and windows, custom oak flooring and a dramatic multidimensional Schumacher faux bois-patterned cut silk velvet for walls. Highlights include gourd lamps from Christopher Spitzmiller, an oxidized bronze cabinet from Lorin Marsh, a 1940's Italian silver giltwood round mirror from Sentimento Antiques, and contemporary bronze benches covered in taupe cowhide from Donzella. The masculine appeal of the rooms is furthered through the circa 1952 abstract expressionist painting by Stephen Pace from the Katharine Rich Perlow Gallery and photographs from Peter Margonelli. (www.lichtencraig.com)

Monica Rich Kosan Photography – Family Portrait Landing – Kosan, a professional photographer who specializes in family and children’s portraits created this landing space to resemble a family portrait gallery with photos in one-of-a-kind custom and vintage silver frames. Here, the family portraits feature the children of the Kips Bay and Girls Club that she has photographed for the past 13 years. The furniture is courtesy of Bergdorf Goodman. (www.mrkphoto.com)

Matthew Patrick Smyth for Gloria Vanderbilt – Memories and Desire Bedroom – Smyth collaborated with legendary Gloria Vanderbilt to recreate the bedroom her aunt Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney decorated for her at 60 Washington Mews circa 1940, when she was a teenager. From her memory Gloria has helped to piece together the fabrics and furnishings even the music and books she was reading at the time. Says Vanderbilt: “I fell in love with the room and forever after tried to recapture it…” Now, with Smyth’s help she has! (www.matthewsmyth.com)

Anne Pyne for McMillen - A Gothic-Inspired Dining Room -The proportions of this room made it an ideal setting for dining and nothing else. Although its vaulted ceiling and dark gothic wood moldings made it seem baronial, Pyne avoided a period feel by integrating modern furniture such as two custom dining tables with tree trunk bases, made in New York City, along with Aesthetic movement features inspired by John Ruskin and author Lewis Carroll such as whimsical wall paper, a giant looking glass mirror and photographs featuring characters from Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. (www.mcmilleninc.com)

Natasha Bergreen and Liza Cousins – Ink and Equine Sitting Room – This design duo has created a sitting room that reflects the owner’s dual interests, tattoos and horses. “Ink” is represented by the Maori tribal design of Sharks Teeth on the Dado. Normally used as part of an armband, the motif has been blown up and painted on white plaster in indigo ink. Equine imagery is expressed through a saddle used as sculpture, decorative tacks and a series of important horse photographs. Walls are painted with a grey flannel finish to simulate fine suiting fabric.

Paula + Martha - Kips Bay Executive Director’s Office – To highlight the charitable mission of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, an organization which has helped New York’s disadvantaged children realize their potential for almost 100 years, design firm Paula + Martha recreates Kips Bay Executive Director Daniel Quintero’s office, showcasing his and the Club’s energy and enthusiasm. In this intimate landing space, the Club’s mandate is expressed through displays of Kips Bay teen slogans embroidered in bright colors on burlap and a collage of photographs of Kips Bay children by photographer Monica Kosan. Like the thousands of kids that have benefited morally and emotionally from Kips Bay, Quintero, Executive Director since 1996, joined the Club as a 10 year old boy in 1970 and was an active member for eight years. Today, he has taken this Bronx-based organization to new heights, helping young people find their moral compass. Additional highlights include an interactive space with three TV monitors generously donated by Compushine placed behind a lightly silvered mirror broadcasting messages from the children. The room was achieved cost effectively with natural and inexpensive materials such as reclaimed oak flooring and borrowed vintage and antique furniture. (www.paulamartha.com)

Plant Specialists - 5th Floor Terrace and Conservatory -The ground floor double-storey conservatory is envisioned as an indoor garden room with traditional materials manipulated in unexpected ways. Nearly every inch of the vertical wall space is covered in ‘green’ with specimen plants including live moss. Two 20-foot triple trunk Christmas Palms create an urban oasis surrounding McKinnon and Harris aluminum outdoor furniture and DuVal Collection Sette sofas and club chairs. The fifth floor terrace also changes expectations with innovative new materials including perforated steel in a Grecian pattern applied to existing decking and adjacent walls, powder-coated aluminum planters for English boxwood hedges, and custom-designed furniture by ‘Qui Est Paul’ in light weight resins. (www.plantspecialists.com)

St. Charles Kitchens - Rhapsody in Blue - by Karen Williams and Robert Schwartz, Principals of the boutique kitchen design firm, St. Charles of New York, is a contemporary tribute to the romance of the Jazz era. The stunning garden level kitchen, played up in cool notes of smoky blues, features a fluid, multi-functional floor plan equipped for both the professional chef and home cook. Highlights include a grand marble-top kitchen island with concealed seating area and induction cook top, a self-contained breakfast area, a sleek in-kitchen wine cellar and a wall of professional series Electrolux ICON® appliances. Sicis iridescent mosaic glass floor tiles, ornate lighting, a spectacular mahogany baby grand player piano and an antique fireplace offer the final grace notes. (www.stcharlesofnewyork.com)

Shields & Company Interiors - Her Bathroom - The inspiration for a lady’s master bath begins with Sicis mosaic glass tile in the dramatic “Dahlia” pattern. The drama continues through a floating vanity designed by Shields & Company topped with a deep lavender glass counter which slices through the shower enclosure; a tri-level ceiling of undulating curves and sprinkled with Leucos “drop” recessed lights which emulate drops of falling glass and an Austrian brass and glass flower chandelier from the ‘70’s supplied by John Salibelllo. The room is accessorized with vintage Blenko glass courtesy of Glasshouse and Casa del Bianco custom designed towels. (www.shieldsinteriors.com)

Susan Harter – Entryway - Decorative Artist Susan Harter transforms the house’s entryway with a luscious garden mural. The scene, which rises onto the arched ceiling, is of a misty garden at dawn. The landscape is a play of light and dark, enlivened by brilliant flowers and colorful butterflies inspired by the recent butterfly exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. The artwork was done on canvas in her Boston studio, and then applied to the walls like wallpaper. (www.susanharter.com)

TK Theaters – Media Room - Together, Audio Command Systems and TK Theaters have created a media room that simplifies today’s complicated technology. The focal point is a Panasonic 65” plasma monitor with the sound system concealed behind acoustical fabric-covered wall panels that give it superb acoustical properties. The Crestron control panel allows a wide range of sophisticated functions such as dimming lights in predetermined levels, operating a variety of AV equipment, controlling the room temperature and even providing access to the house security system, all in an easy to use way. Designed in a clean style by home theater designer Theo Kalomirakis, the room is highlighted by iconic George Hurrell studio portraits of Hollywood celebrities from the 30’s and 40’s adding vintage glamour to the uncluttered room design.(www.tktheathers.com)
Vincent's Painting & Decorating – English Basement Hallway - In the space leading into the kitchen, this decorative painting firm was inspired by the architectural detail of the ceiling, walls, and trim to create the antique limestone faux finish. In the hallway adjacent to the limestone finish they installed a Tyler Hall wall covering and painted the trim in an off-white satin finish. The ultimate goal was to create a warm and enveloping feeling that would transition seamlessly into the lavish rooms on either side.

William T. Georgis – “Safe Room” – While security and surveillance are essential to the lower level safe room, design, beauty and sublimity take precedence featuring a combination of art, furniture and weapons. The room provides a place for study, contemplation and hiding -- acknowledging the human need for comfort in potentially extreme circumstances. George Condo’s Jesus on the Cross (2007), a 19th century Danish Egyptian Revival chaise, and Richard Dupont’s haunting sculpture of distorted figures, Lever House Study (2007), animate a lair upholstered in gray Ultrasuede, lined with weapons, and stocked with survival supplies. An Empire bureau plat allows for writing, while the stainless steel commode provides relief. The disco ball spins to the endless party tracks.

Zoya Bograd/Bograd Kids - “Dorothy’s Room” - Inspired by the 70th anniversary of the “Wizard of OZ,” this child’s bedroom is highlighted by Judy Garland’s Gold Record of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on loan from the Judy Garland Museum in Minnesota. Bograd designed a custom area rug representing Dorothy, Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Woodsman above which sits a custom crystal half balloon chandelier hung from a ceiling surrounded by the classic phrase – “There is No Place like Home.” Additional elements include an emerald green dresser and nightstands with silver foil tops; Princess Bookcases from the ZoyaB Collection displaying a collection of Robert Tonner “Wizard of Oz” dolls; a complete set of Wizard of OZ stories and an original 1939 Dorothy Doll, also on loan. The room is completed by a silver foil Princess Bed upholstered in pink vinyl, with custom Italian bedding embroidered with images from the L. Frank Baum book. (www.BogradKids.com)
