Background
The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club was founded in 1915 and incorporated in 1922. Its mission is to provide boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 18 with programs and facilities aimed towards after school enrichment, and improving the quality of life and future for disadvantaged juveniles in New York’s Southeast Bronx. Services are provided at the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse and six outreach locations. One of their outstanding alumna is Jennifer Lopez, who was a club member in the early stages of her career.
Location
In 1969, the club moved its headquarters to the Soundview section of the Bronx where the Randall Avenue Clubhouse operates today. In 2002 work on a new Sports Complex was completed with the finishing of the ice rink and dome. In December, 2005, a greatly expanded community center, the West Bronx Clubhouse, an $8 million renovation that began in the fall of 2003, was dedicated to serve residents of the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has also recently taken over the Castle Hill Community Boys & Girls Club and a senior center previously run as the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club. |

The Kips Bay Decorator Show House
Every year Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club holds it’s globally recognized, premier interior design showcase as a fundraiser benefiting the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Pat Carey is the Chairman of the 2006 Decorator Show House Committee and Vice President of the Board of Trustees. Richard L. Ridge is the Chairman of the Designers’ Committee.
Design showrooms donate fabrics, carpets, and furniture; industry sponsors, such as Philips, Electrolux, and Molteni, donate products; a full range of volunteers give their time and effort; and local decorators lend their talent and creativity into transforming a designated home into a dazzling showcase open for public viewing. This year the site is 4 East 75th Street in Manhattan, the former Harkness House. For more information on the designers, see DesignIntuit’s Featured Designers Section. For more information on the Harkness House, see DesignIntuit’s House History.
